Since 2015, Janet Marie Smith has led strategic design thinking efforts at Camelback Ranch to make the facility truly feel like the Dodgers’ second home in Arizona. Adding signage, graphics, and oversized memorabilia to the site, Canopy Team and the Dodgers have created photo moments for fans attending workouts and games, as well as key touch points for players throughout the facility to create a slice of “Blue Heaven” at Spring Training.
Consistent renovations and upgrades have taken place at nearly every aspect of the Dodgers’ Spring Training facility as the use of training facilities has evolved into a year-round function. Renovations include tenant improvements like women’s locker rooms, outdoor conditioning areas, as well as interior remodels across player locker rooms and office areas. Canopy Team has also led the addition and implementation of artwork, graphics, and signage throughout the facility.
The most recently completed large-scale project was the Dodgers Performance Lab, completed in January 2024. This project added a 12,000 square foot indoor lab and outdoor agility area, the lab is comprised of two instrumented batting/pitching lanes as well as complimentary office/conference/work spaces, storage areas, and technology infrastructure. Initial siting and design was a careful balance struck with players, staff, and executive leadership while construction was planned/sequenced in order to only take nine months to complete and minimize disruption to the team’s occupancy.
The design and programming of the lab is intentionally flexible as the primary occupant besides players is the Dodgers Performance Science department, who are responsible for remaining on the cutting edge in both equipment and training methods. The enabling work in the building’s design is complicated on the design side in order to remain simple and flexible into the future in operation.
