The 2011 renovation and expansion efforts of Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, FL transformed the Orioles’ spring training facility from an “ugly duckling” to a “must-visit” attraction for all Grapefruit League Fans. Under the careful direction of Janet Marie Smith who represented the Baltimore Orioles in the oversite of master planning, the renovations to the 1989 Ed Smith Stadium and Twin Lakes Training Fields not only brought the facility up to Major League standards for the players, but also made the venue an oasis for fans.
With the additions of refurbished seats to the seating bowl from the Orioles’ home ballpark, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a fabric sunshade system extending the stadium’s original roofline, and picnic areas for flexible game viewing, Smith and team led strategic thinking to create a relaxed, iconic atmosphere at Ed Smith Stadium. In an effort to provide fans with relief from the heat at spring training games, the design team also added a café, as well as three new air-conditioned suites – Suite 66, Suite 70, and Suite 83- each corresponding to the club’s three World Series championships.
